Tom Izzo is an American college basketball coach who has been the Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball team’s head coach since 1995.

Izzo surpassed Bob Knight for the most wins by a men’s basketball coach at a Big Ten school with 663 on March 6, 2022.

Tom Izzo played from 1973 to 1997 for the men’s basketball team at his university, setting a school record for minutes played. After graduation, he was selected to be the head coach at Ishpeming High School for one season.

Later, he was the assistant coach at Northern Michigan University from 1979 to 1983. Then he became a part-time assistant at Michigan State in September 1983.

In addition, Tom Izzo worked as an assistant coach at the University of Tulsa for two months in 1986.

Moreover, he was chosen as the associate head coach right before 1990 and in 1995 was made the head coach of men’s basketball for Michigan State University (MSU).

Likewise, in 2013, he was voted by USA Today Sports as the fifth angriest coach in college basketball. With Tom Izzo as a head coach at MSU, the team won nine regular-season Big Ten championships and five Big Ten Tournament titles. Also, on November 26, 2015, he won his 500th career game.

In 2016, Tom was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

With a win over the No. 4-ranked Purdue Boilermakers on February 26, 2022, Izzo equaled former Indiana coach Bob Knight for the most wins at a Big Ten school.
