Stevens was a member of the school’s basketball team and helped them to four consecutive victories. Stevens left a remarkable record at the University as a three-time Academic All-America nominee student, in addition to his BA degree in Economics.

After leaving his job at Eli Lilly and Company, Stevens became a volunteer for Butler University’s basketball team prior to the 2000–01 season. On April 4, 2007, he was named head coach after five seasons as an assistant coach.

Stevens broke the NCAA record for most wins in a coach’s first three years in 2010, his third year as head coach. On April 4, 2011, he led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive national championship game. Stevens was a regular finalist for the Horizon League Coach of the Year award, which he won twice.

Stevens’ success landed him a six-year contract with the NBA’s Boston Celtics in 2013. He has led the Celtics to the NBA Playoffs every year since 2015, has won a division title, and has reached the Eastern Conference Finals in each of his last two seasons.
